Soldiers Quote #1
(From Danielle Raver's short story THE ENCHANTRESS)
D.M. Raver
Thick chains attached to the wall hold a metal collar and belt, restraining most of the tiger's movements. Open, bloody slashes cover his face and back, but he shows no loss of strength as he pulls on the chains and tries to rip the flesh of the surrounding humans with his deadly claws. Out of his reach, I kneel down before him, and his lightning-blue eyes cross my space for a moment.
“Get her out of there!” I hear from behind me.
“Numnerai,” I speak urgently to the tiger. “They will kill you!”
He growls and gnashes his teeth, but I sense he is responding to me.
“Great white tiger, your duty is to protect the prince. But how can you do that if they sink the end of a spear into your heart?” He looks at me for a longer moment. The fighters respond to this by growing still. In their desperation, they are overlooking my foolishness for a chance to save their fellows' lives. I crouch on my feet and begin to nudge closer to him. The tiger growls a warning, but does not slash out at me. “Think of the prince, protector of the palace. Right now he prays for you to live.Soldiers Quote #2
[Iain, addressing the Rangers at the end of the French & Indian war]
Pamela Clare
Never has the world see a war as this one, but you turned the tide of it, spillin' your blood to keep frontier families safe. Years from now, people will remember the Rangers, the sacrifices you made, the battles you fought, the victories you won. I pray that peace will follow you all your days.Soldiers Quote #3
[The Church] has lived through its early travails and has now come to accept an easier way of life. It is content to carry on its painless program with enough money to pay its bills and a membership large enough to assure its future. Its members now look to it for security rather than for guidance in the battle between good and evil. It has become a school instead of a barracks. Its members are students, not soldiers. They study the experiences of others instead of seeking new experiences of their own.
A.W. TozerSoldiers Quote #4
‘Can’t you see what they are?’ I said. ‘They’re all dead.’
Steven RamirezSoldiers Quote #5
‘Eighth one this week,’ he said.
Steven RamirezSoldiers Quote #6
‘There’s no time for right or wrong,’ I said.
Steven RamirezSoldiers Quote #7
A common and natural result of an undue respect of law is, that you may see a file of soldiers, colonel, captain, corporal, privates, powder-monkeys, and all, marching in admirable order over hill and dale to the wars, against their wills, ay, against their common sense and consciences, which makes it very steep marching indeed, and produces a palpitation of the heart.
Henry David ThoreauSoldiers Quote #8
A day came when I should have died,
Guy Sajer
and after than nothing seemed very important,
so I stayed as I am, without regret
separated from the normal human condition.Soldiers Quote #9
A quick check on the platoon showed everyone more or less enjoying the flight.
Tanya Huff
Whatever it is you're eating, Ressk, swallow it before we land, [said Staff Sergeant Kerr].
No problem, Staff.
More like whoever he's eating, Binti muttered beside him.
You ought to count your fingers, he suggested. You're too serley stupid to notice one missing.
Maybe you ought to gren sa talamec to.
That's enough, people.
When the Confederation first started integrating the di'Taykan and the Krai into what was predominantly a human military system, xenopsychologists among the elder races expected a number of problems. For the most part, those expectations fell short. After having dealt with the Mictok and the H'san, none of the younger races - all bipedal mammals - had any difficulty with each other's appearance. Cultural differences were absorbed into the prevailing military culture and the remaining problems were dealt with in the age-old military tradition of learning to say up yours in the other races' languages. The us against them mentality of war made for strange bedfellows.Soldiers Quote #10
A riverless silence made the air heavy.
Steven RamirezSoldiers Quote #11
A young man is the perfect soldier. He has great potential for aggression and a limited critical capacity—or none at all—with which to analyze it and judge how to channel it. Throughout history societies have found ways of using this store of aggression, turning their adolescents into soldiers, cannon fodder with which to conquer their neighbors or defend themselves against their aggressors.
Carlos Ruiz ZafónSoldiers Quote #12
All around them were the bodies of dead Chinese soldiers. They lined the verges of the roads and floated in the canals, jammed together around the pillars of the bridges. In the trenches between the burial mounds hundreds of dead soldiers sat side by side with their heads against the torn earth, as if they had fallen asleep together in a deep dream of war.
J.G. BallardSoldiers Quote #13
All right, he thought, okay; if thats the way it is; a savagery of anger in him now at the picture. They call them pin-up girls and think its cute how our boys, now that they're drafted, love to hang them in their wall lockers. And then close up all the whorehouses, every place they can, so our young men will not be contaminated.
James JonesSoldiers Quote #14
Although I'm an atheist, I try not to crap all over people's belief in God. It may be nothing more than a placebo, a fairy tale that gives the hopeless hope, but sometimes a little hope is all people need to get through the day. Imagine a unit of soldiers under heavy enemy fire. They are told by their superiors to hold their position, even in the face of overwhelming fire power. The soldiers are being told that reinforcements are on the way, and that thought alone gives them the hope and courage to continue fighting, even if ultimately the reinforcements never arrive. I think some people simply need to believe that God is sending them reinforcements, to get through another day.
Oliver GaspirtzSoldiers Quote #15
Am I awake or dreaming? It doesn’t matter anymore. When I close my eyes I dream of death and war. When I open my eyes I see death and war.
Michael AnthonySoldiers Quote #16
Among men, it seems, historically at any rate, the processes of coordination and disintegration follow each other with great regularity, and the index of the coordination is the measure of the disintegration which follows. There is no mob like a group of well-drilled soldiers when they have thrown off their discipline. And there is no lostness like that which comes to a man when a perfect and certain pattern has dissolved about him. There is no hater like one who has greatly loved.
John SteinbeckSoldiers Quote #17
An army is a miniature of the society which produces it.
C.L.R. JamesSoldiers Quote #18
Are you okay, man?
David Bellavia
Yeah, I'm good.
It's a lie. I wonder if I will ever be good again.Soldiers Quote #19
Are you pair mad? You pitch up as if you own the place, and then you offer to relieve me of two centuries’ worth of

equipment?’ He glared across the wooden expanse at Marcus and Qadir. ‘An officer fresh out of his napkin, and a chosen man in fancy dress with a bad suntan. Well, the pair of you can fuck right off.Soldiers Quote #20
As Lynn writes: What angers me is the loss of control. At any moment someone could come to me, be dressed the right way and use the right code, and I no longer have free will. I will do anything that person requests.
Lynn Hersha
I hate them for that. Nothing else is as bad as known that I am always out of control; knowing that I am still a laboratory experiment, a puppet whose strings are hidden from ever but my handlers, and I don't yet know how to break free.
p216Soldiers Quote #21
Because here's the thing?we don't give a shit about fairness here. We're soldiers. Soldiers do not give the other guy a sporting chance. Soldiers shoot in the back, lay traps and ambushes, lie to the enemy and outnumber the other bastard every chance they get. Your kind of murder only works among civilians. And you were too cocky, too stupid, too insane to realize it.
Orson Scott CardSoldiers Quote #22
Behind every beautiful thing, there's some kind of pain.
Bob DylanSoldiers Quote #23
Bless God, he went as soldiers,
Emily Dickinson
His musket on his breast—
Grant God, he charge the bravest
Of all the martial blest!
Please God, might I behold him
In epauletted white—
I should not fear the foe then—
I should not fear the fight!Soldiers Quote #24
But I was still determined to protect her. It might be the one good thing I would ever do in my life. I wondered if God would even notice.
Steven RamirezSoldiers Quote #25
But sons have to be soldiers. And soldiers adapt.
Alex IrvineSoldiers Quote #26
But what do the dead say?
Dalton Trumbo
Did anybody ever come back from the dead any single one of the millions who got killed did any one of them ever come back and say by god I'm glad I'm dead because death is always better than dishonor? Did they say I'm glad I died to make the world safe for democracy? Did they say I like death better than losing liberty? Did any of them ever say it's good to think I got my guts blown out for the honor of my country? Did any of them ever say look at me I'm dead but I died for decency and that's better than being alive? Did any of them ever say here I am I've been rotting for two years in a foreign grave but it's wonderful to die for your native land? Did any of them say hurray I died for womanhood and I'm happy see how I sing even though my mouth is choked with worms?Soldiers Quote #27
But, new soldier that I was, I understood at last what Cadus had been trying to tell me all along: that life and love and rank were not enough. To be whole in myself, I needed honour, and I had lost it, and could see no way to get it back.
M.C. ScottSoldiers Quote #28
Cadets can neither be treated as schoolboys or soldiers.
Robert E. LeeSoldiers Quote #29
Casey's flesh and blood sends the war machine's children to exclusive private schools.
Cindy SheehanSoldiers Quote #30
Centurion! Would you like to be a cavalryman one last time? There are Venicones who escaped when your line was broken to be hunted down, and Tribune Licinius has ordered me to take the best men available in their pursuit. Leave this hairy gentleman to watch the fun, and join us in the hunt!
